If you’re in the market for an affordable, economical compact car you’re not alone. The latest Cars.com, USA TODAY and MotorWeek Challenge set out to find just that. After setting a top price of $20,000 and a requirement of at least 28 mpg, the competition was narrowed down seven: The Kia Forte, Hyundai Elantra, Toyota Carolla, Nissan Sentra, Subaru Impreza, Ford Focus and Honda Civic. Each car was driven for a full day on a 200-mile stretch of Maryland road by a handful of drivers including six expert judges and a real-world consumer looking for a new car. And the winner? The 2014 Kia Forte LX! With 780 out of a possible 1,000 points the Forte ranked 20-points higher than the number 2 vehicle. Judges like the way the Forte looks (“sporty yet simple”), feels (the seats are “some of the most comfortable”) and drives (“ride and handling are excellent”).
